Description:

" Awakened Heads " represents the slave trade, and indeed something that is still going on today, namely the migrants who try to cross the sea to reach other shores. The heads are golden to express that these people died, no matter what they went through or what they did, these people died at sea, but their spirits remain, their struggles remain. We understand them, we support them, especially we as black women, we as African men, we know what they went through. I didn't want to paint the sea in blue and white because these are colours that convey holidays, joy... So I made a black sea to express mourning. A black sea, from which these awakened and golden heads emerge, to express the sheer density of the sea, the density of ordeals, the density of everything that is happening, of racism. Everything that this society wants to use to drown, to push these people down, it won't work. Because their spirits remain, their names remain, we talk about them, we continue the fight for them in our own way, on a daily basis. Gold is to represent wealth, to express the value of these people who fought in the past against the slave trade and who continue to fight now against all that is racism, migration, etc.
