Artist statement
I strongly believe that I was born an artist. The universe neglected my hearing but gave me sight and mind to work with. My art is an expression of myself. At the tender age of eight I realised I could record my memories, experiences, tastes and feelings through drawing. Now, people understand my perspective, how I think, my vision and desires much more effectively. My art feels like a relief from the stress of vocal communication that I struggle with. My wild brush is the only tool that complies to the dance of the rhythm of my soul with every motion and brush stroke I make. My art not only decorates society, it also expresses emotions, struggles, desires and most importantly my perspectives. I also can’t help but view artists as the third eye of society; this skill is like a pass to a special and unique dimension of the world and society, that I only can access. I can then report my findings and reactions to these revelations by replicating it on the canvas.
My inspiration and mentor has been Patrick Mubaki who took me as in student in 2010. I was amazed by his bold paintings in his studio. Patrick is a renowned artist at the Dust Depo Art Studio in Nairobi Railways Museum.
I am a visual artist who aspires to have my own studio, venture into garden art and landscaping (with my Dad’s help) as a means of extra income and even experiment with other themes, i.e. portraits, landscaping, memories, human trafficking (Women’s Rights), nudity, feminism, the environment and murals. I use charcoal on paper, acrylic on canvas, ink, bleach, coffee, oil paints, pastels and chalks to create my artwork.
I have displayed artwork at Circle Art Gallery, One Off Contemporary Art Gallery, Lamu Fort, British Council, Polka Dot Art Gallery, ShitfEye Gallery, Kerry Packer Civic Gallery in South Australia, Absa Art Gallery in South Africa, US Embassy, Nairobi Museum and many more.
