Collection: Au creux de nos âmes

For Anne-Marie Akplogan, whether we are in motion or at rest, these parts of the human body can reveal just as much as the gaze in a portrait. A hand wrapped around an ankle, a foot searching for balance, a folded leg, such ordinary gestures that often escape our notice. Yet these movements root us in reality, embodying the material, sensory and lived experience of existence. It is through these fragments of the body that the artist reflects on the ways we inhabit the world.

This collection displays works produced during the artist’s Villa Alsacienne residency in Paris, between October 2025 and March 2026.

The focal point of this work are the hands caressing the calves.

In Akplogan’s work, it is no longer the gaze that reveals the soul, but the position of the legs. It is as though human portraits were now conceived with this part of the body in mind. Here, the model is seated on the floor with their legs crossed and their arms wrapped around them.

A reclining figure of which we can see only the lower half. The work conveys a sense of the depicted person's rest.

Series «Au creux de nos âmes» n° 15

The artist wanted to present a metaphor for the fact that human beings are constantly evolving, unfinished beings.

Series «Au creux de nos âmes» n° 19

Akplogan depicted a person with moving legs, perhaps in the act of jumping. The right leg is fragmented, a metaphorical representation. The painting consists of white paint on a white background.

Series « Au creux de nos âmes » n°23

The toes of the left foot are superimposed on the right foot, forming a parallel angle. Cracks and a faint fissure forming dark cavities are visible on the toes. They may serve as visual metaphors for the wounds that human beings inflict on themselves throughout life.

A hand clutching a foot. If we assume that the feet and legs convey as much as the eyes and face in a portrait, this gesture would be a distress signal from the person depicted.

Untitled

This work is one of three in the exhibition that are not part of the “Au creux de nos âmes” series. It stands out for the ornaments—specifically jewelry—on the legs and for the green color of the skin.

The work employs a very distinctive technique that Akplogan explored during his residency at the Villa Alsacienne in Paris: the cardboard is scratched to reveal its fibers. This relationship with the medium is similar to our relationship with our own skin. Here, the artist has depicted a resting pose with the hands wrapped around the ankles.

Here, the shot is taken from below, and we can see one hand holding the sole of the foot and another that is likely about to do the same. Is this a depiction of a stretching pose?
