Collection: Telluric Silhouettes - Tiemar Tegene

Tegene applies ink to her first medium with ingenuity and dexterity. She spreads it with varying amounts of color, or conversely removes some to create texture; she stamps it with varying degrees of pressure—all of these are sensitive, physical gestures that resemble a process of exploration. Tegene explores the potential of shades of gray, much like a a lifelong researcher of printing techniques.

“Telluric Silhouettes” brings together two artists whose practices are rooted in a physical and sensory relationship with matter. The title evokes both the power of the Earth and the silhouettes that emerge from it: bodies, beings, and forms traversed by the forces of the world around them. For both Reinata Sadimba and Tiemar Tegene, the material is the site where the earthly and the human meet. Earth, ink, imprints, reliefs, and layers give the figures an almost organic presence, as if they were emerging from the material itself. “Telluric Silhouettes” invites us to view these silhouettes as presences rooted in a physical, cultural, and living world.

Paper III

This work forms part of a long tradition of studies by artists throughout the history of art. Here, the subject is a playful cat.

Mourning your love IV

This full-face portrait catches the eye with its headdress and decorated shawl. The background, which is slightly lighter, also features ornaments drawn by hand – or to be more precise, with a cotton bud.

Mourning your love II

This three-quarter-length portrait bears the characteristic hallmarks of Tiemar Teguene, an experimental printmaker. Indeed, the ornamental motifs in the bottom right-hand corner were drawn using a cotton bud, and the texture printed in the top right-hand corner was created by pressing a piece of fabric onto the printing matrix.

I Want to Hide Her Face, in Weaving

This work, which gave its name to the exhibition "Telluric Silhouette", depicts a tree with dense foliage. The light filtering through the tree’s canopy, as well as its texture, was created by rubbing a cotton bud over the engraving matrix.
